Spreading the beef with a new Twitter turf twar

Bovril and Marmite are two of the best-known dark brown spreads. Some sneer at the saltiness, others love to spread it on their toast and gulp down as more-ish hot drinks. Now things have entered the social media space, with #BattleOfTheSpreads taking off on Twitter...

You know you've done something right - or more likely, you've done something wrong - if your brand's being mentioned on Twitter. It's one of the easiest places to vent, slam or compliment. But competitive advertising's something else, and can be a clever way to highlight a competitor product's flaws or features in a way that makes your own shine more brightly in consumers' minds.

One brand 'twar' in particular's been making headlines on Memeburn and Business Day Live lately. They report that it's a fight to see which is the number one spread in South Africa, but of course there's been lots of planning behind the scenes to get the 'twar' going in the right direction.

Personally, when it comes to dark brown spreads, I prefer mine a little more nutty and sweet - hello Nutella!

Why not take this further by getting all spreads involved! Stand up cheese spread! Punt your peanutty-ness, Black Cat! It might just lead to a revolution in the way we think of sandwiches.

I'm not alone in my inclusive thinking either:

If you're absolutely intrigued and can't wait to find out more about the difference between these spreads, click here, and don't forget to follow the #Battleofthespreads hashtag as the turf war gets messier.
