Aspiring DJs get their break

Thirty-two-year-old Mitchell's Plain resident, Jonathan Müller, and vibrant twenty-four-year-old Goodwood resident, Phumelelani Mayongo, have won the Cash Crusaders So You Think You Can Mix? competition on Heart 104.9FM. The two winning DJs have won state-of-the-art DJ-ing equipment, mentoring by some of Cape Town's most prominent DJs such as Diggy Bongz and Peter A, as well as exposure on Cape Town's Beat, Heart 104.9FM.
Following the success of last year's So You Think You Can Mix? competition, Cash Crusaders and Heart 104.9FM partnered once again in search of the Mother City's next up-and-coming DJs. After a number of entries and an extensive selection process, five finalists were chosen by a panel of judges made up out of top Heart 104.9FM DJs and a Cash Crusaders representative. The two winning DJs were chosen purely on the votes from Cape Town listeners.

Jonathan, who is responsible for the procurement of dental spares by day, is a veteran DJ by night with over 20 years of experience on the turntables. He began at the age of 11 years old when he joined a rap group as a beat boxer and started practicing on the group's turntables; a Technics SL1200. From that moment on he has been mixing and DJ-ing and showing Cape Town what he has to offer.

Phumelelani is a Training Administrator at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology's Human Resource Department and is currently studying towards a BTech in Human Resource Development. Phumelelani has always had a love for music and dancing and he began DJ-ing in late 2008 when he started messing around with on a few turntables after which he decided to buy his own DJ equipment. He has been DJ-ing ever since.

As South Africa's largest supplier in DJ equipment, Cash Crusaders believe in investing in the DJ industry and does this by creating a platform for aspiring DJs to take their career to the next level through the So You Think You Can Mix? competition.

"The main struggle for a DJ is getting exposure and a competition like this can help you gain that exposure you need. I am very thankful to Cash Crusaders and Heart 104.9FM for this opportunity," says Jonathan.

Both Phumelelani and Jonathan are avid Cash Crusaders customers and purchase all their DJ equipment there. "They have just what I want at exactly the right price. I'm in a relationship with the store!" says Phumelelani.

As the winners of the So You Think You Can Mix? competition in Cape Town, Cash Crusaders will fly Phumelelani Mayongo and Jonathan Müller to Durban to wow the Gagasi 99.5FM listeners with their mixing talent at the Durban So You Think You Can Mix? competition winners event in June this year. This will also be Phumelelani's first experience of flying in an aeroplane. "Spinning in Durban will definitely be the biggest highlight in my DJ quest so far," he adds excitedly.

Listen out for some of Phumelelani's and Jonathan's mixes at 17:35pm on the Afternoon Drive Show with Diggy Bongz on Heart 104.9FM. Listeners can also become fans of the official So You Think You Can Mix? Facebook fan page.
