Informal traders get tailor-made insurance

The South African National Retail Alliance (SANTRA) in partnership with Smartcall Insurance Administrators launched South Africa's first Funeral Membership Plan for informal traders this week. The plan is the brainchild of SANTRA President Livingstone Mantanga, a seasoned leader and campaigner for the rights of street traders and hawkers.

According to Mantanga, informal traders are contributing to the economic growth with the creation of thousands of jobs, as the latest national statistics indicate that up to 3 million people in SA are informal traders.

Mantanga says, "We're now at a critical stage of working with the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Council on the street by-laws, we're in the business of creating value for our members through strategic partnerships with government and corporate SA.”

SANTRA's strategic partnership with Smartcall Insurance Administrators (an authorised Financial Services Provider), took place on 20 August 2008 at the Johannesburg City Hall with the keynote address by Mantanga, Smartcall Insurance Administrators' MD Craige Fleischer and officials from the City Of Johannesburg.

The Funeral Membership Plan will cost SANTRA members only R20 monthly, and benefits include:

  • R5000 life-cover to all SANTRA's registered members
  • Bulk Vodacom Airtime at Discounted prices
  • 10 Vodacom Starter Packs
  • Point of Sale material to promote Vodacom Airtime

“Street traders and hawkers are overlooked by banks, SMME funding agencies and big business at large because they fail top understand the nature of business in the second economy. Mr Mantanga has tutored us on the nature of informal business and the value proposition of street traders and hawkers. In the process we've created a unique insurance policy for his members who in most cases cannot get insurance because of the high price that makes it impossible for street traders to afford. We've also created a new revenue stream in the airtime sales platform for his members, airtime sales runs into the billions annually. It's time for street traders and hawkers to benefit from the discounted bulk airtime offer,” said Fleischer.

SANTRA has a membership of 5000 registered members in Johannesburg.
