Saronsberg was eventually declared the overall winner once individual judging scores were taken into account, with one of five judges scoring Rickety Bridge higher, one scoring them exactly the same and three the Saronsberg higher.
Meanwhile, judges voted Obikwa Shiraz 2009 as South Africa's Best Value Shiraz. In addition to clinching the Best Value award in terms of best quality versus price, it was also awarded a 3-star rating by the judges, outshining other higher priced wines entered in the competition. It retails at R23 countrywide.
There were 184 wines entered into this year's Shiraz Challenge and the depth of quality and breadth of styles in this category judged the wines.
