SA music managers get representative body

The Music Managers Forum has been launched in South Africa. It is a formally constituted body that is aimed at giving music managers more than an individual voice, raising the standards of the industry and recognising the achievements and qualifications of artist and band managers in the music environment.

For years managers in this country have been seen as disorganised, money grabbing, uncommitted thugs, according to the MMFSA statement. At the same time it has been a business on which there is very little information, support or training. The MMFSA will begin the process of regulating the industry and attempting to train and educate music mangers and groom them to be proper business partners for musicians. It is the intention of the stakeholders to create an association which is representative of all music managers and supportive of the SA music industry through wide consultation with stakeholders and industry players.

The MMFSA has a vision of creating a platform of cooperation in the business of music management. This means establishing ties and communication channels with all relevant players such as broadcast authorities, record companies, the media, musicians and other concerned parties.

The Mission Statement of the MMFSA is as follows:

  • It is the purpose of the Music Manager's Forum of South Africa to bring the business of all different genres of music to one table, speaking as one voice about the practice, vision and execution of South African Music.
  • Our business is to encourage and develop professional, ethical and effective management for the music industry in Africa.
  • Our values include developing South African music and musicians in all their many facets by providing management guidance and training.

The MMFSA has secured membership of the International Music Managers Forum (IMMF), which in turns represents the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) at the United Nations.

Formulating a strong body, the MMFSA can be represented at Trade Fairs, nationally and internationally, dealing with Government, NGO's, other Export Councils, other music institution, artists and public, allowing managers to speak with one voice. The MMF SA will strive to make links with organisations like: MAPPPSETA, DAC, DTI, WITS, ILASA, SAMPA and others.

The MMFSA invites all music managers to join the organisation in order to add their voice to the power of the organisation. Musicians, managers and interested parties are urged to visit our website for more information and to sign up to join the Forum. The web address is: www.mmfsa.co.za.
