University campaign gets Circle of Excellence Gold Award

The Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE), one of the world's largest higher education associations, has awarded the University of Johannesburg and HKLM's 'Join the Gang of Greats - Rethink Education. Reinvent Yourself' campaign with a Circle of Excellence Gold Award for best advertising campaign in 2010.

The awards recognise excellence among higher education institutions and attracted 2 703 entries from 615 higher education institutions worldwide. Colleagues who understand the challenges, opportunities and rewards inherent to the advancement division; value creativity and innovation; appreciate the complex demands of campus environments; and recognise the role of advancement practitioners in enhancing the quality and reputations of educational institutions, judge them.

The 'Gang of Greats' creative concept, highlighted the power of great minds in a liberating manner, suggesting that similar potential could be unlocked in students enrolling at the University of Johannesburg (UJ). This concept subsequently evolved into the current campaign targeted at postgraduates and highlighting great achievements of 'sons and daughters' of UJ that have made significant strides in particular sectors of society.

"The University of Johannesburg is thrilled to have made its mark in the international higher education marketing arena. We believe this is a first for any higher education institution in Africa and certainly a feather in the university's cap," says Lesmarie Bentley-Steyn, senior manager: marketing and brand, UJ.

The university works in a consultative manner with HKLM to formulate the creative and the campaigns that are run. Over and above the above-the-line campaigns, in-house campaigns are run using the creative elements in use that particular year.
