From silence to strength: Amplifying the voices of young South Africans
Let's imagine that climate activist Greta Thunberg had been born in Soweto or Swartruggens instead of Stockholm, Sweden. Would adults in South Africa have taken her seriously at age 15, when her school strikes for climate made her world famous? And would a homegrown teenager have a voice strong enough to hold her own among global leaders at the World Economic Forum? Probably not. Or rather, not yet. 5 Jun 2023 Read more

How any employee can become an intrapreneur
An intrapreneur is the reason why South African insurance clients have gone from speeding and harsh braking to driving with the cautiousness of someone transporting a chocolate cake on their back seat. Intrapreneurs also gave us the free 'Please Call Me' cellphone message, the 'like' button on Facebook, as well as Google Maps, Sony PlayStation and other staples of modern life. 14 Nov 2022 Read more

Swipe right on side hustles: The rise of side hustles in SA
Hustling has traditionally been a means for South Africans to make it through the month. Even those in full-time employment increasingly hustle on the side - for an additional income stream to their monthly salary. What's new is that a growing number of middle and higher-income earners in South Africa are turning to side hustles to supplement their nine-to-five jobs. 14 Nov 2022 Read more

How experiential learning can create the (socially- and self-aware) leaders that SA needs
In life and in leadership, it's crucial to understand that there is always a bigger picture than the one we see; and the best way to expand our understanding is to engage with diverse perspectives. To illustrate this, I like to tell a parable from Southeast Asia. It's about five blind men coming across an elephant for the first time and how each describes the creature from a different side: the man holding the tail says 'an elephant is like a rope'. The one touching the legs says 'it's like a tree'. Another one, holding the trunk, likens it to a snake, and so on. Each of their perspectives is correct in some way, but it is only by combining them that they can better understand the 'whole' of the elephant. 14 Nov 2022 Read more

Sowing the seeds of change: Advancing the interests of women agripreneurs through collaborative conversations
Women in agriculture frequently face gender-specific obstacles worldwide. Impediments such as lack of access to land, education and finance often put women farmers at a disadvantage before they ever put a plough to a field or sow a seed in the ground. This gender gap imposes significant costs on society in terms of lost agricultural output, food security and economic growth. For Africa to fulfill the 2030 sustainable development goal (SDG) agenda, the empowerment of women agripreneurs must be placed at the centre of policy making, and then carefully monitored to ensure implementation and achieved outcomes. 25 Mar 2022 Read more

A food systems approach: Setting the table to address agriculture's triple challenge
Imagine the concept of 'food systems approach' as organising a concert to bring together a wide range of performers across different genres, from classical orchestras and folk singers to rock bands and hip-hop musicians. To make it work, you need to take the relationships and power dynamics of all the stakeholders into account, who despite conflicting interests and external influences have to collaborate for a shared cause. Obviously, when looking at food systems, the stakeholders are not musicians, but people who produce, distribute or consume food. And instead of harmonising different music genres, their shared cause is the triple challenge of 1) ensuring that the growing global population has access to enough good-quality food; 2) providing livelihoods for the millions of people working in agriculture and the food supply chains; and 3) that all this is done sustainably. 1 Dec 2021 Read more

How to find business funding
What do jockeys and entrepreneurs have in common? Not much at the face of it, but there are clear parallels between piloting a horse and getting a business to fly. Right out of the starting gate, entrepreneurs are in a race to win business funding in a way that jockeys steer their charges through a competitive field to reach the winning post. Business owners can learn from the way successful jockeys are in tune with their horse and know the ins and outs of the racetrack. 30 Nov 2021 Read more
