New chief for Independent Newspapers' sales and marketing arm

Tony Howard, CEO of Independent Newspapers, has announced the appointment of Andrew Cuthbertson as Group Sales Director in charge of The inc, national sales and marketing arm of the company, effective 1 April 2003.

"Stewardship of The inc is a vitally important function in our business," said Howard. "Our decision to appoint Cuthbertson is based on his successful background in both the UK and South African newspaper industries and on the new dynamism he has brought to the Gauteng sales and marketing functions. These and other factors make him an excellent choice for the post. Prior to this appointment, John Lloyd, sales and marketing director of our Cape division, has done an admirable job filling the position on a caretaking basis."

Cuthbertson will retain responsibility for the Gauteng sales and marketing portfolio.

Commenting on his appointment, Cuthbertson said, "Under the direction of John Lloyd, The inc has made considerable progress in the last six months, putting me in the enviable position of inheriting the top newspaper sales team in the country. My focus will be on the development of a fresh and innovative approach to meeting customers' needs and thus building our dominant market share, while maintaining the high standards of service for which The inc is renowned."

Cuthbertson will report to the executive director: operations, Nazeem Howa, while Lloyd resumes his position as sales and marketing director at Independent Newspapers, Cape.
