Sanlam Cape Town Marathon entries open

Entries are officially open for the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon, which takes place on the weekend of 16 and 17 September.

An opportunity for participants from both South Africa and around the world to run through the city of Cape Town, this iconic marathon brings with it prize money in excess of R2m, the largest sum ever offered for a South African standard marathon.

    All are welcome

“Young or old, professional or amateur, you’re warmly invited to be part of this year’s historic festival of running,” says Elana Meyer, ambassador for the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon. “We’re already receiving huge international interest.”

Last year Sanlam Cape Town Marathon had a total of 19,336 participants in all the events held over the weekend, with the 42.2km standard marathon seeing 7,939 entrants, a 38% increase from the previous year. With an entry cut off in both the marathon and the 10km of 10,000 runners we are expecting a closed event.

The runners came from 67 countries around the world and we saw 59 elite athletes from five different countries compete. This was a fantastic turnout and Cape Town saw a huge influx to the Mother City for the event. In both the 10km and Marathon route records were broken with our men’s winner in the marathon achieving an IAAF gold label status time of 02:08:41.

The 2017 Sanlam Cape Town Marathon is managed by a joint partnership between Western Province Athletics (WPA), ASEM Running and the City of Cape Town. Meyer, a South African Olympic medallist and repeat record-holder in long-distance running, and South African rugby great Francois Pienaar are both ambassadors for the event.

    The events are:

Sanlam Cape Town Marathon 42.2km – the classic Olympian 42.2km standard marathon distance. 17 September – 07h00.
    Sanlam Cape Town 10km PEACE Run/Walk. 17 September – 07h10.
Sanlam Cape Town 4.2km PEACE Fun Run. 16 September – 12 Noon.
