The partnership between AutoReach and Johannesburg Council for the Disabled (JOCOD) started over 11 years ago. AutoReach outsources contract work to JOCOD and their annual contribution benefits 380 disabled adults, who are each remunerated for the work he or she produces.
The vision of JOCOD in Lenasia, south of Johannesburg is to become an independent and economically viable organisation providing an integrated holistic service to people with disabilities, totally self-sufficient and managed by the people with disabilities for the people with disabilities.
JOCOD empowers and develops people with disabilities by providing them with:
Employment and career opportunities
Skills training and development
Care and supervision
Recreation and sport
The outcome is improved quality of life, dignity, independence and respect.
To implement, monitor, maintain and evaluate their programmes JOCOD requires funds. With Government funding at 43% of their total income, they have come to rely on income from industry providing them with contract work which is not always guaranteed. They therefore continuously need to grow their commercial ventures that will provide them with new income streams.
There are three contract workshops providing work to 380 disabled people at JOCOD. The work entails packaging, assembling, counting, collating and labelling of items. The work differs in complexity and the tasks that are involved. Each workshop has a manager, supervisors and assistant supervisors to ensure that the work is done according to specifications, that quality control is in place, that the deadlines are met and that dispatching is efficiently and effectively fulfilled.
JOCOD currently has five contractors who outsource work to them. AutoReach takes pride in the fact that they are making a positive difference in the lives of the people JOCOD serves.
Obtaining contract work is a continuous challenge for JOCOD. Should you want to become a supporter of JOCOD by contracting them for an assembling or packing project you can contact Linda on 011 852 2144/7 or or visit them at www.jocod.co.za.
JOCOD. Working together. AutoReach salutes you.
