Aptly named because South African soccer players, soccer legends, musicians, local celebrities and radio DJs attended to support the campaign, the event provided a great way to create awareness about this year's Heart Squad soccer clinics, which begin in November. These clinics were established by Heart 104.9FM in 2008 and continue to show the stations dedication to post-World Cup soccer development in Cape Town.
The clinics were developed by sports anchor, Nick Feinberg, and they run from November to January annually. They are free of charge with the long-term goal of raising the standard of soccer in Cape Town and South Africa. Feinberg believes the region to be boundless in talent at the grass roots level but acknowledges that this potential is not always fully realised. The station is developing sporting opportunity in the community and is hoping to scout talented youngsters in the process.
The Celebrity Soccer Day took place at Rygersdal Football Club in Rondebosch. Between 10:00am and 4:00pm, boys and girls from the ages of 6 to 12 had a chance to show their skills during two 90-minute clinics. Professional players from Santos Football Club were present and shared valuable football advice and life skills with the youth. The kids then had the opportunity to collect autographs and take photographs with the PSL team.
The atmosphere was amazing and everyone had fun getting involved in 5-a-side social soccer matches & penalty shoot-outs. The event was for the whole family and even offered a match for toddlers to get involved and show their skills. Santos Football Club was out to pledge their support for the initiative and held an autograph signing session for the youngsters. Matches between the radio stations DJs, local celebrities, soccer legends and PSL players completed an exciting day in which the beautiful game was the winner.
Local singers Yolanda Yawa, Keeno Lee, Steven Lee and Gift Gwe entertained with brilliant musical performances, while entertainer Kurt Schoonraad was the event MC and even refereed a few games for fun. The Heart 104.9FM team fought bravely against the celebrity team, but bowed out after a very close penalty shoot-out. The legends thrashed the Stereotype team with a 9-5 score.
"At the end of the day it is all about the kids," said former Santos FC legend Edries Burton. "It's their future and it's about the legacy that they will leave behind. It was great to be a part of Heart's wonderful initiative. It is a great opportunity and a platform for young kids and we should continue to support it."
