'Show your heart' in support of Heart 104.9FM's next charity challenge

Heart 104.9FM, or 'Cape Town's Beat', is building a solid reputation for being one of the country's most caring and socially conscious radio stations. Recent charitable initiatives run by the station include the 'Mommy and Me Walk' in association with the Canal Walk Foundation, The Toy Run; Kite Festival and the 'Heart Squad' soccer clinics and teams. Now, the station's CSI division 'Show Your Heart' will once again be helping needy kids by putting their hearts and voices behind a local charitable cause. Heart 104.9FM in association with local non-profit organisation (NPO) Newkidz on the Block and the MySchool Fundraising Programme, is aiming to raise awareness for another worthwhile cause by completing an 'extreme makeover' of part of a children's home in Khayelitsha, an impoverished township located outside Cape Town.
Heart 104.9FM is aiming to encourage one thousand of the station's listeners to volunteer to help needy kids by assisting with the makeover of a number of homes on the orphanage premises. MySchool, in turn, will be donating R130 000 towards the project and will encourage their partners and cardholders to support the makeover through donations of cash or in kind. The homes, which house children from the ages of 0-18 years form part of Baphumelele Children's Home, a place of refuge for orphaned and abandoned children. Some of the structures in the complex are in a state of disrepair and desperately need a complete overhaul and refurbishment to make them warmer and more welcoming for the children that live there.

Newkidz on the Block, an established registered NPO based in Cape Town concerned mainly with the plight of orphans in South Africa, will oversee all logistics related to the transformation of the Baphumalele Children's Home. Founded in 2007, the organisation builds child-support networks in communities and helps to place orphans with foster families or in children's homes, and they promote foster care to the general public and offer guidance to foster families. Newkidz facilitates the renovation and maintenance of children's homes, foster family accommodation and places of safety in collaboration with volunteers and corporate sponsors. The organisation aims to give people who want to give back and support those in need, but aren't sure where to go and what to do about it, an opportunity to help.

Heart 104.9FM and the MySchool Fundraising Programme aims to support the initiative by helping to raise financial support for the project to the value of ZAR 260 000. Heart 104.9FM listeners will be encouraged to make donations towards the initiative by contributing funding or services to Newkidz on the Block, which is registered for donations tax and will issue a tax certificate for all donations received.

Heart 104.9FM listeners will also be encouraged to donate goods and services towards the makeover project including the likes of paint (including enamel, interior and exterior paint), bathroom supplies, plumbing materials, electrical and light fittings, materials for the construction of windows and doors (including glass, frames, etc.), guttering and built-in cupboards. Donations towards furniture and soft furnishings are also required, including a lounge suite, television set, DVD player, and comfortable bean-bags for the children to sit on.

Heart 104.9FM and the MySchool Fundraising Programme encourages all Cape Townians to get involved by assisting with making the following repairs to the houses:
  • Repair indoor and outdoor cement work
  • Lay grass in between the houses
  • Paint the interior and exterior walls
  • Paint the ceiling and all doors
  • Repair all light fittings and switches
  • Repair plumbing
  • Repair cupboards and install new handles and hinges
  • Replace cornices
  • Oversee minor handyman jobs
  • Repair broken windows
  • Install new curtain rails and curtains in all the rooms
  • Provide new soft furnishings
  • Supply of lawnmower; weedeater & hosepipe with attachments
The fundraising and awareness initiative commences on Heart 104.9FM on Monday 20 June, runs for just under six weeks and culminates in a big makeover weekend taking place from Friday 29 July to Sunday 31 July, where volunteers from all over Cape Town will work three hour shifts to help complete the makeover. Heart 104.9FM On-Air Personalities and staff will volunteer alongside the public and the station will broadcast on-site from the children's home from 06h00 until 18h00 on Sunday 31 July.

Heart 104.9FM will promote the initiative on air and encourage listeners to enlist as volunteers for the makeover weekend and Newkidz on the Block will manage the processing and logistics of registering volunteers, processing their details and assigning them with specific tasks and duties.

Heart 104.9FM and Newkidz on the Block appeal to local community groups, corporates, small and medium sized businesses, families and individuals to get involved and volunteer for the makeover weekend; to make a financial donation towards the project, or to sponsor goods or services towards the initiative.
