The Heroes of Comedy - saving the world one laugh at a time

Seven comedy superstars will be joining forces with the Absa Heartwarming Campaign to raise funds to uplift 17 disadvantaged schools in and around the Cape Metropole, with the biggest comedy festival show to date on the 20th of September 2008 at the Grand Arena, Grand West Casino.
“The Heroes of Comedy”, hosted by Joyner (Seinfeld and The Chris Rock Show), will not only showcase the best of the 2008 Cape Town Comedy Festival, but will also come to the rescue of the much needy kids of Cape Town, which forms the focus of Absa and Heart 104.9FM's Corporate Social Investment initiative. “A percentage of every ticket sold will go towards uplifting the primary schools that we have adopted,” says Gavin Meiring, Station Manager for Heart 104.9FM.

Featuring one of the strongest line-ups to date, the world's top comedians, including SA's best, will become super heroes when they raise much needed funds for this worthy campaign.

Fresh from Chris Rock's No Apologies world tour, Mario Joyner takes up the reins as the host of the show. Renowned for his uncanny ability to see hypocrisy and the sheer ludicrousness of everyday situations, Joyner's easy delivery and laidback style disguise a razor-sharp wit that never fails to get audiences screaming for more.

American Joyner's comedic pedigree includes Chris Rocks' hit sitcom, Everybody Hates Chris and a guest performance on TV's evergreen, Seinfeld. He recently reunited with Jerry Seinfeld, opening his nationwide tour of the US. Aside from his numerous television appearances, Joyner has starred in several movies, including the cult classic, Pootie Tang.

Joyner will introduce Cape Town audiences to the hottest acts from the UK, Canada, Malawi and Australia as well as local comedy sensations, Nik Rabinowitz and Trevor Noah.

Comic superstar Sugar Sammy returns to South Africa Festival after winning over South African audiences as the hilarious host of the Cape Town Comedy Festival's Main Arena in 2006. Since appearing in the Mother City two years ago Sammy has opened for Dave Chappelle and enjoyed considerable international success, especially in his homeland, Canada. He has been voted the number one stand-up for the last three years by the readers of The Montreal Mirror, the city's top entertainment weekly.

Starting out as a DJ on YFM, Trevor Noah's silver tongued delivery and wicked sense of humour moved him into comedy on a full-time basis. He endeared himself to the nation with his never-say-die attitude and surefootedness in the second season of SABC 2's Strictly Come Dancing, ensuring his partner and he reached the finals. However Noah's real talent comes out once he is behind the microphone. As opening act for Canadian comic Russell Peters and for crooner Julio Iglesias, Noah received great critical acclaim and has become one of the most highly sought-after entertainers in the country.

Noah is joined by fellow South African Nik Rabinowitz whose multilingualism and flair for comedy pinpoint topics that unite all South Africans in laughter. Despite his relative youth, Rabinowitz is considered among a handful of the country's top comedians and has demonstrated at last year's Comedy Festival that when it comes to stand-up, he not only stands up to international acts, but stands out too.

Considered one of the top comediennes in the UK, Australian Kitty Flanagan is a regular headliner at the UK's prestigious London Comedy Store and is a household name in her homeland having appeared on numerous popular television shows. Flanagan has traveled the world, performing in festivals and comedy clubs everywhere from Paris to Berlin, Dubai to Tokyo and Canada to Cannes, also fitting in appearances at the renowned London Comedy Store.

Representing the UK is the riotous Rob Rouse, one of Britain's busiest comedians. He first made his name on the live circuit, winning Channel 4's prestigious So You Think You're Funny? competition at the Edinburgh Festival in 1998. As part of the successful comedy trio Big and Daft, Rob took three shows to the Edinburgh Festival. Striking out on his own, Rouse's sold-out solo shows were applauded by critics and TV offers began pouring in. He has since appeared in numerous BBC comedy shows and is currently developing his own sketch show Daft Punch for ITV.

Daliso Chaponda hails from Malawi, but has become an international man of comedy after moving to the UK where he quickly established himself on the highly competitive comedy circuit. Daliso achieved critical acclaim in Canada for his one-man show Feed This Black Man and a spot at Montreal's prestigious Just For Laughs Festival in 2005. Versatility is his strength and he is able to hone in on the funny bone no matter what the topic.
