Heart 104.9FM on the move

Cape Town radio station Heart 104.9FM is quite literally going where no other radio station has gone before. Last week the first of a series of “Heart On The Move” outside broadcasts saw the Afternoon Drive team broadcasting live from the deck of a yacht as it cruised around Table Bay. This venture was the first ever nautical broadcast in the history of radio.
Heart 104.9FM on the moveThis Friday the station will be doing the first ever broadcast live in traffic with its listeners. The Bokomo Hearty Breakfast Team will be escorting one of its listeners to work from the Southern Suburbs traveling down the M5, with traffic guru Eddie Chinnappen from the City of Cape Town joining them on their journey.

Over the next two weeks the station will be making more history with live broadcasts from more “secret locations” that will be the envy of other radio stations throughout the country. The station will also be taking listeners with them to all of these exotic locations.

The key to Heart 104.9FM's groundbreaking mobile broadcasting capacity is the acquisition of new technology from America. According to their Broadcast Technician, Babu Parker, the station can offer almost studio quality broadcasting from anywhere with a 3G signal. This opens vast opportunities to genuinely take the station to its listeners.

Programme Manager, Vernon Adams, is delighted. “Heart 104.9FM's number one priority has always been to offer radio that reflects the real life of the community of Cape Town. Now we can be absolutely anywhere the people are and still offer a high quality product,” says Adams.

The March series of “Heart On The Move” broadcasts is designed to excite the advertising and marketing industry's imagination, and is set to result in some of the most exciting radio that Cape Town has experienced.

The first ever nautical broadcast in the history of Radio?-
I don't think so. What about all the vessel based radio stations (pirate radio stations) broadcasting in Britain in the 1960s?

wish you would check your facts!-
i wish commercial institutions would check their facts before laying claim to making "radio history". You don't even need to go back to the '60s, Mark Gillman a few years ago did his 5fm breakfast show for a few days while aboard a yacht doing to Cape-to-Rio. Well done on once again making fools of yourselves Heart 104.9FM!

And East Coast Radio??-
And ECR did it two years ago with Darren Scott on the "Spirit of Elan" for his drive show... And yes, Pirate radio stations used to broadcast off-shore in the 1960's in "international waters" to prvent themselves being prosecuted for illgal broadcasting. So maybe just a first for ....Cape Town...not quiet the "world of broadcasting".

Algoa FM also did it.-
Back in the late 80's Algoa FM also did an Outside Broadcasts from a yacht. They used a directional FM antenna that had to be manned so that it stayed pointing to the reception point on land when the yacht drifted. This was long before cellphones and wireless data.

Now all they need to do is find their financial manager...-
...and the R7.1million he stole, so that they can pay for all these wonderful ideas. Check the story on IOL. Missing: radio manager and R7,1m set_id=1&click_id=13&art_id=vn20080312 060042320C739067

Yes check your facts..-
Mark Gillman also broadcasted from a submarine, under the water while at 5fm years ago, where does Heart get off saying that they are groundbreakers of any sort, or that they make radio history, please give me a break. Vern and Gavin should know better than to make statements like this, how credible are you now to the industry and especially to people who know what they are talking about when you make statements like this, typical Heart..Always piggy backing on other radio stations ideas and flogging it off as their own.

R7.16 million to be correct-
R7.16 million to be correct is missing, and the figure might rise, well great ideas do cost you know..

nice to see you guys are tuning in to Heart ;) do your station bore you too? let me see, 300 000 drop for Kfm in a year... i love heart. yes we know they not as rich and pro as the other CT stations but at least it gets me tuned in and coming back. anyone ever think that maybe these are ploys to get exposure? cheap and tacky maybe but think about it ;) anyways, they may have lost R7.16m and some clever person who typed up the press release for the moving around thing on a yacht or broadcasting while driving in traffic didnt do his homework on previous broadcasts, but im still tuned in :)as a listener, i get to enjoy their talks and music. dont get that gel in a breakfast team on GHFM nor on Kfm. all im saying, as a theorist, i think that maybe they WANT the attention and they WANT the industry to notice them. use it, dont use it. and i know im gonna expect witty and middle finger comebacks now from mostly old or ex dj's who either never made it or was overlooked by a commercial station or just an unhappy person and yes, you have the right to say whatever you like :) but at the end of the day, im liking especially their breakfast show and im liking their music. good hope arent going anywhere with their teddy pendegrass followed by afvirl lavigne followed by FLG's put your hands up for detroit. then theres the capes number one (S)hit music station ;) Apparently Kfm lost close to 40 ppl since feb 2007, anybody wanna confirm that for me please? come on, you know you can, you work there :) yes, FOURTY :)

radio guy
oh please!!!!!-
What a crock of s(hit)!!! so what department at Heart do you work for??? If you take off your blinkers and read the previous comments objectively you'll note that none of the comments made reference to anything heard on-air but were in fact all in reference to a poorly drafted/researched press release. The Hearty Breakfast show is shocking! Filled with cheesy jokes and one liners with no hint of intelligence! I think its an insult to the station's listeners!!! Don't knock your competitors when you need to clean up your own house. how many people have left heart within the space of the last couple of months... come on answer that for yourself! and please... don't insult us by trying to convince us that the FD running away with millions and a looming sex scandal is all part of a publicity stunt! for a station that tries to market itself as embodying family values i sure hope it can come up with a better marketing strategy than that!

radio guy
who are you trying to fool???-
once again you're blinded by your ignorance/arrogance. Yes, being a Capetonian I am familiar with that shocking breakfast show, one only need listen to it for one day (show) to discover what you're NOT missing! As for my other comments they were once again about things happening off-air.... So NO I don't listen to Heart, but clearly you have a vested interest if you're so happy/convinced that by people commenting on this forum that they have to be listening... once again... stop insulting our inteligence!!!
Posted on 17 Mar 2008 09:39
Afraid So-
I'm not as anti Heart's on-air content as "radio guy" at all - i think their content rocks and has far more listener value than K or GHFM - even if the final presentation is below par. The point here though, "anti format", is the LUDICROUS claim that they as a commercial broadcaster made, with full-time PR and copy writers at their disposal. And THAT remains a first class crock of cocktales that DESERVES ridicule. This is an industry forum and this should NEVER have made it to these pages.
Posted on 17 Mar 2008 18:09
fully agree-
there is no excuse for sloppy research or total lack thereof at a commercial level. perhaps you're right about the substance of the content but surely the fact that the final product is below par at a commercial/professional level is not acceptable.

im with you guys-
if you read my comment, its exactly what i said. i said it was obviously the blunder of some dont know nuttin PR guy.
Posted on 17 Mar 2008 20:08
be fair-
to be fair 'anti format' you said much more than that, almost to excuse the lack of professionalism. Heart needs to realize that it is playing in a big pond and mediocracy cannot be excused at this level.

Nautical breakfast show-
For God's sake you make a fool of yourselves ..during the entire sixties and seventies radio was transmitted from boats like Radio London, Radio Caroline or Radio Hershalom off Israel (which I transmitted from in 1983 to 85) Please do your research .......airheads

radio guy? quiet after your spelling blunder? ;)-
hehehe, saying intelligence then spelling it incorrectly. now that sht is funny :) guys, im still tuning in to heart, i still go back there. the big ct radio stations bore me. i heard that 40 ppl left in a yr. i was told, to date, 7 ppl have resigned (from 1st of Jan 08 to 20th March) i read they lost 300 000 listeners (KFM 94,5) thats almost 3 times the listeners of a community station or capetalk for that matter. to get back to it, you were poking fun of their teambuilding, a crook who ran away with 7,16 million and a PR blunder. All im saying is that Heart, once they get more help, are gonna be a force to be reckoned with, once they get their act in order. they are already the fastest growing station in CT. as for Joburgs number 1... is it true that Kaya overtook them?
Posted on 20 Mar 2008 19:28
why are you trying so hard...-
anti-format... like was previously mentioned by someone else in this forum thread, is a platform which the media industry in South Africa uses to keep abreast of what's happening and to have healthy debate, however it seems you are determined to resort to insulting people when you realise that people are not accepting your arguments/logic. Now I could try and convince you that my 'spelling blunder' was merely a typo or I could argue that much like Tony blair made headlines a few years ago for spelling 'tomorrow' with two 'm's, that would just be petty and I'm not going to resort to your level... the argument made not only by myself but also by the majority of the previous posts in this forum thread is that Heart made a juvenile mistake by making such a ludicrous claim which cannot be excused. you continue however to persist in drawing attention to the shortcomings of heart's competitors... perhaps Heart should hire you as their PR! i ask you once again... find out how many people have left Heart since about October of last year... also, don't simply brush aside team-building shenanigans like it has no bearing on the on-air product... i certainly would not want my kids listening to some guy/girl pretending to be talking from some moral high-ground, representing Cape Town Soul... whilst clearly that's not the case. Also lets not pretend that Heart should not be held responsible for the loss of this R7.16M. Where are the checks and balances??? surely other senior managers should have picked something up a long time ago. Also how did Heart do background checks when hiring the FD to begin with? He defrauded the Foschini Group prior to working for Heart. Lets stick to the facts and stop pretending like these are not major issues! oh and anti-format i have not proofread this comment before submitting it so i beg your forgiveness for any spelling, grammatical, punctuation or semantic errors which you may encounter whilst reading this!

Once they get more help???-
anti-format, listeners can't/won't even reform to saying Heart 104.9FM. if you speak to many of them they'll tell you outright P4 reminds them of the good old days and hence why they'll continue to refer to Heart by its old name... what do you mean "once they get more help"... who do they need/want help from??? they've been taken over by one of the biggest media groups in the country. All of Kagiso Media's radio stations are dominating in their respective markets. ECR; Jacaranda; Kaya FM; iGagasi; they are all doing remarkably well, so yes i agree with you, Heart needs to get itself in order... and by the way, when Heart became Heart they were the fast growing station in the country... so now according to you the scale has dropped a bit and now only in the region... strange how thats possible when according to the last rams diary they dropped more listeners than GHFM

How many lifelines are they expecting?-
There is a limit to the number of times a station can be helped, before someone concedes that maybe they aren't getting it right because they just don't have what it takes. The same tired old voices, bland content and cheesy one-liners just isn't enough to create compelling radio. And in any other industry, somebody who appointed a financial director without doing a reference check, then gave them free reign with no checks and balances in place, would be fired if that person absconded with the company's cash - especially when the company was so cash-strapped to start with!!! I say put the licence up for sale and let's see what someone else can do with it. It would be nice to see some fresh ideas and fresh talent entering the stale WC market.
