Now there's a lot more to this donation than meets the eye - the donation came about as a result of an on-air wager between Myers and Heart 104.9 listeners about the final outcome of last week's Stormers game. (Last Saturday, Myers boasted that he would donate the money that he had wagered on the game to a charity of listeners' choice should the Stormers be able to walk home with the winning score.) With his tail between his legs, Myers returned to Heart 104.9 studios on Sunday morning and kept his word. Listeners were then asked to nominate charities to act as recipients for this offering. Of the charities nominated, eight names were put into a hat, and drawn. In the end, the Woodstock Trauma Centre was selected.
In addition to this tremendous show of support, Az Abrahams will also be participating in the 40-hour famine (an initiative by World Vision), starting at 8pm on Friday 5th May and ending at 12 noon on Sunday 7th May, to highlight the plight of hungry families and child-headed households around the world. Abrahams will go without solid food for the full 40 hours. He will be allowed to drink water at any time and may replace meals with fruit juice, milk and other beverages.
Listeners can sms their messages of support for Abrahams to 34150 (R2 per sms) and the proceeds thereof will be donated to The Haven Night Shelter for the purchase of food hampers.
