An annual event to stimulate the sharing of strategic and creative insights as well as knowledge between the affiliated agencies, the conference is one of the highlights on the Network's calendar, as are the awards. This year's head judge was Francois de Villiers, creative chairman at Draftfcb Cape Town.

"This year's awards saw us looking at work from eight different countries and across a range of different cultures and languages. However, the winning entries all had one thing in common: an idea at the heart that cleverly and clearly got the message across regardless of the language, geography or a cultural of the creator," he said.

"Just as clear was the fact that all of the agencies in the Draftfcb network are committed to producing work that is entertaining and stands out from that of our competitors. Congratulations to the winners and a big 'keep trying' to all those who so narrowly missed out this year."

The winners, and the judges' comments, are:

  • Print Campaign:
Agency: Golo - Mozambique for Vodacom
A wonderful visual demonstration of the old saying: 'A picture is worth a thousand words'. Memorable images are made up of words describing the picture and accompanied by the headline: 'When words aren't enough, send an MMS'. The work has a strong campaign look, beautiful art direction and a simple concept pulled through in an interesting and engaging manner.

  • Press Single Entry
Agency: Cread - Mauritius for Mauritius Post Ltd.
A very dramatic 'product demonstration'. This execution has great stopping power with an arresting visual, which underlines the efficiency of the brand in a memorable and provocative way.

  • Press Campaign
Agency: Executive Center - Angola for Edicentre
This engaging and informative campaign is a great example of how to get a lot of information across in a very entertaining way. The work really pulls the reader in and the art direction works as hard as the copy in creating a solid campaign which readers will want to spend time with.

  • Print - Point of Sale
Agency: Creative Eye - Rwanda for the Rwanda Film Festival
This work celebrates Africa with the juxtaposition of powerful African imagery with a film graphic. The use of striking colour and contrast helps in creating a campaign feel and the end product is both arresting and memorable.

  • Outdoor/billboard
Agency: Golo - Mozambique for Dentyne
This work has the efficacy of the product at its heart and a smile that lights up is a wonderful way to get the product benefit across. The idea is clear, simply executed and represents a great use of the medium.

  • Direct Mail
Agency: Golo - Mozambique for Vodacom 3g Launch invite
Design at its best. This concept is brilliantly single-minded and allows the recipient to take part in the concept and involves them in the message. This invite draws on a well-known visual property to get its idea across.

  • Television
Agency: Executive Center - Angola for Super Bock Beer
This humorous ad clearly demonstrates the product differentiator with an entertaining twist. The ad combines some great performance work with high production values and holds the product at the centre of the concept. It is memorable and is sure to be talked about in the market.
