Scan Display acknowledged for advancing the exhibition industry

The Exhibition & Event Association of Southern Africa's (EXSA) annual awards function is always a glittering affair, but this year the description was literal as attendees dressed up in gold to fit the night's theme of 'all that glitters is gold'. For exhibition and display specialist, Scan Display, the night held even more sparkle when it received two prestigious accolades: Justin Hawes was inducted into the EXSA Hall of Fame and Pippa Naude received the Chairman's Award.

The Hall of Fame inductees are chosen for their contribution to the professionalism and advancement of the industry. Justin Hawes, Scan's MD, has served on the EXSA Board for six years as chairperson, past-chairperson and vice-chairperson. During this time he implemented many new practices for the industry - including launching the annual EXSA conference, re-introducing the EXSA Stand Awards after a dormant spell, and using the Bizcommunity platform to promote exhibitions alongside other marketing mediums.

Justin has also helped to put the South African exhibition industry on the world map. Through his involvement in the International Federation of Exhibition and Event Suppliers (IFES), he successfully campaigned to bring its annual conference to Cape Town in June this year.

Says Justin: "Being inducted into the Hall of Fame means a great deal to me. It has always been my aim not only to run Scan as a profitable business, but also as a vehicle to bring about positive change and growth in our industry."

Scan's marketing manager, Pippa Naude, was also honoured to receive the Chairman's Award, in recognition of her dedication to promoting sustainability in the industry through her work for the Event Greening Forum NPO (EGF). She represents the EGF on the EXSA Board, and has been pushing the green agenda in a number of ways, including through the creation of the EXSA Green Awards which were launched in 2012.

The business tourism show, Meetings Africa, received two awards for the Best Trade Show (3 001-6 000m²) and Best Green Show. This event is managed by Scan On Show, which is a joint venture between Scan Display, event organisers On Show Solutions, and business partners Tau Management.

Scan Display also received three awards for stands it had designed and built. These were:

  • Best System Stand (under 12 m²): ABSA
  • Best Mixed Stand (system & custom): Norvartis
  • Best Green Stand: Standard Bank
