Hat trick for Oasys Electrical in KZN

Durban promotes itself as the sporting capital of South Africa and this statement rings true with two of southern Africa's biggest horseracing events being held at Greyville racetrack in the capital of KwaZulu-Natal. Oasys provided the electrical infrastructure for these events.

Southern Africa's most popular horseracing event, the Vodacom Durban July, attracted over 50 000 spectators and entertained audiences on 31 July 2010 at the Greyville racetrack. The infrastructure included 210 fluorescent fittings, 305 plug points and lighting on the scaffold lighting towers, inside Tent Town as well as chandeliers, spot lights and exit signs. Oasys also supplied power for plasma screens and televisions and provided electricity to more than 40 hospitality marquee kitchens. Furthermore, they connected all the generators and supplied the electrical infrastructure to the picnic areas.

Says Kevin Hughes, Chief of Operations for Oasys Electrical: "The Durban July has been a part of the Durban culture since 1897 and has increased in both size and popularity over the years. This is an extensive and exciting project for Oasys Electrical, due to the high volume of requirements."

Canon Gold Cup 2010, which also took place at Greyville racetrack, in June, is one of the largest horseracing event in Southern Africa. "For this project we provided 55 fluorescent lights, 55 plug points, exit lights, as well as distribution boards," explains Hughes. This race was run for the first time in Durban in 1921, focusing on developing the talents of long distance racehorses, or 'stayers', over the 3200m race.

"Completing the 'hat trick' for Oasys in KwaZulu-Natal, we also supplied the electrical infrastructure for the Durban Air Show, which took place in July at the Virginia Air Park," continues Hughes. He explains that over 100 light fittings were provided, which included those in portable toilets, 60 plug points, as well as distribution boards to this sold out event. The show was hosted by the Rotary Durban North and featured the mirage fighter jet and the SAAF crack aerobics team, to mention a few.

Hughes concludes: "We are pleased with our strategic involvement in these events over the past month and look forward to other shows that Oasys will be involved with in KZN during the remainder of 2010."
