#OnTheBigScreen: Cut-Out Girls, Ford v Ferrari and Jexi

The films opening at South African cinemas, this week, include writer/director Nicola Hanekom's first feature-length film, Cut-Out Girls; the automobile action-biopic, Ford v Ferrari; a new comedy from the writers of The Hangover, Jexi; and NT Live's A Midsummer Night's Dream.

Cut-Out Girls

The story of how six young women’s lives are altered by the actions of two aspiring sportsmen. Kevin and Mike are young men trying to get ahead in the competitive world of tennis. When one of them discovers a dangerous key that can unlock their potential, things get out of hand.

Their worlds become intertwined and spiral out of control. A small series of seemingly insignificant moments weave together with devastating consequences. In every moment lies a choice.

The frightening truth is that we all can turn from ‘us’ to ‘them’. The trick, the prayer, the hope is that we won’t. Cut-Out Girls is inspired by the #MeToo movement and is a film about date rape aimed at creating social change.

Written and directed by Nicola Hanekom.

Ford v Ferrari

This action-biopic follows an eccentric, determined team of American engineers and designers –  led by automotive visionary Carroll Shelby (Matt Damon) and his British driver, Ken Miles (Christian Bale) –  who are dispatched by Henry Ford II (Tracy Letts) and Lee Iacocca (Jon Bernthal) with the mission of building from scratch the Ford GT40, a new racing car with the potential to finally defeat the perennially dominant Ferrari at the 1966 24 Hours of Le Mans race in France.

This is the story of a group of unconventional thinkers who overcame incredible odds to achieve something extraordinary through sheer inventiveness, determination and force of will.

Inspired by a true-life drama about a powerful friendship that forever changed racing history, Ford v Ferrari was a 10-year journey from page to screen for filmmaker James Mangold, the masterful storyteller behind Walk the Line and Logan.

But his Facebook status is about to change. When he is forced to upgrade his phone, the latest model comes with an unexpected feature…Jexi (Rose Byrne) – an AI life coach, virtual assistant and cheerleader. With her help, Phil begins to get a real life.

But as he becomes less dependent on his phone, Jexi’s artificial intelligence morphs into a tech nightmare determined to keep Phil all to herself, even if it means ruining his chances of finding success.
