#MusicExchange: Vaughn Prangley releases EP titled "Where It Begins"

South African singer-songwriter and guitarist Vaughn Prangley is carving out a unique path with his unmistakably deep, soulful and emotionally weathered voice that speaks to a maturity way beyond his years. His work takes his listener on a journey through personal experiences.

With his first single, “Oasis”, doing well on radio, Prangley has just released his first EP "Where It Begins” last week.

I chatted to the Prangley post-event.

    The new decade means:

Learning to roll with the punches as every aspect of what we thought we knew is being continuously disrupted and finding your way to contribute to this ever-changing world.

    Retirement will happen when:

I don’t think I’ll ever properly retire. My brain is busy and I’m always up to something. I very seldomly just sit down and do nothing; I get bored very easily.

What does music mean to you?

Music is a way of expressing myself and sharing my emotions.

    My music is about:

I turn everyday situations into melodic stories that people can relate to.

What is the most enjoyable aspect of your work?

Producing a piece of music I’ve written as well as performing it. The feeling of bringing your music to life is incredible.

The song you must do in every show?

At this stage, “Green Eyes”. I love the way the crowd interacts with the song as they “hey” along with me.

    Any funny moments on stage:

Nothing beats that awkward voice crack; the joys of being a teenager!

What is your most treasured possession?

My guitar and, recently, a close second, my piano.

It’s your round, what are you drinking?

A milkshake; a good ol’ chocolate milkshake.

    Nicknames:

    Chizzel.

Pick five words to describe yourself:

    Grounded, ambitious, creative, witty, loving.

    Favourite SA artists:

Matthew Mole, Jeremy Loops, Johnny Clegg.

    What song changed your life?

“Breathing”, which is on my debut EP. It was the song that I first played for my producer and sparked this incredible and exciting journey.

    What is your favourite word?

    Vibe; everything’s a vibe.

    Favourite fashion garment:

    My rings.

    Top of your bucket list:

    To see the northern lights.

    Your greatest achievement:

Releasing my music for the world to hear.

What do you complain about most often?

    School.

    What is your fear?

    It’s heights for sure.

    Happiness is:

Doing what I love every day. Making, writing, producing and performing music. Waking up on a Monday morning and being excited for the day.

    On stage, I tend to:

Stand with my legs crossed (as seen on the cover of “Where It Begins”). May seem awkward but is actually surprisingly comfortable.

The best life lesson you have been taught:

To treat everyone around me with some form of respect. I’ve learnt not to judge anyone based on first impressions without having any knowledge of the person. We never know what someone is going through. Sadly, we live in a very judgmental society.

Do you do charity work and, if you do, what do you do?

Yes, I do. We raise money for a charity that provides for a home of safety for abused and abandoned babies and toddlers.

    Wishes and dreams:

That my music will reach people far beyond the borders of South Africa. To continue to have the privilege to do what I do.
