Oasys supplies infrastructure to the ‘sexiest exhibition on earth'

Known by many in the events and exhibitions industry as the ‘sexiest exhibition on earth', Sexpo is now the most popular public exhibition in South Africa. This global phenomenon has attracted over 1.5 million people and has been running for over 10 years. Sexpo was launched in South Africa in 2007 and has enjoyed phenomenal growth. This year's Johannesburg Sexpo took place at the Gallagher Convention Centre from 1 to 4 October with a record-breaking 46 000 visitors attending over the four-day period.

The exhibition focuses primarily on sexuality, which explores both sexual fun and health education. It is also a lifestyle exhibition showcasing all forms of adult lifestyle brands and services. With over 200 exhibitor stores on show, this public event caters for adults interested in embracing their sexuality and improving their lifestyle. Visitors to the exhibition were able to purchase an array of items ranging from erotic books, lingerie, spa baths and health and fitness products. Special workshops are also on the go throughout the day and couples may also seek expert advice from qualified sexologists.

Says Silas Howarth, organiser of Sexpo: “This year's exhibition demonstrated a record turnout. As we opened the doors every morning we had over 2000 people walking inside in the first hour. Considering the fact that the world is in the midst of an economic crisis, the significant growth in attendance at the exhibition validates the necessity of a show of this nature. Gone are the days where sex was taboo. South Africans are embracing their sexuality and are interested in being better informed on sexual health issues.”

Oasys Innovations supplied the infrastructure for this health, sexuality and lifestyle exhibition. Says Carl Woodland, chief operating officer at Oasys Innovations: “The exhibition was well attended and is notably the fastest growing exhibition in South Africa. We supplied 1523m² of shell scheme and 8000m² of carpeting for the event.”

“An exhibition of this kind is extraordinary and naturally raises a few eyebrows. It is not for the faint-hearted. However, there is something for everyone. From informative sexual advice to entertaining pole dancing and erotic art, there are multiple avenues for visitors to explore. It is all about freedom of expression. A strict policy of no under eighteens is implemented and security officials request ID verification at the entrance. We are looking forward to another even bigger and more successful Sexpo next year,” concludes Howarth.
